The mural on the wall above the high altar of St Martin's Church was painted by Hans Feibusch in 1949. It details Christ in agony on the cross, flanked by two crosses on which hang others condemned to death. At the foot of the cross we see the Virgin Mary and the Beloved Disciple.
Feibusch was a German Jew born in Frankfurt in 1898. He served in the German army on the Russian front 1916-1918. When the Nazis came to power Feibusch emigrated to England, swearing the oath of allegiance to the British Crown in 1940. He painted murals in about 30 Anglican churches including St Martin's and Chichester Cathedral. He converted to the Christian faith in 1965. He died four weeks before his 100th birthday in 1998.
